Central Park STEAM Robotics Team

The Central Park STEAM Robotics Team is a booster club at Central Park Elementary for inspiring students in STEAM-based competition and events. Families work collaboratively to support each other and share resources.  We are 100% volunteer run and funded by the families who join our membership.

Parent participation is required as our programs run after school and require parent supervision.  Parents must complete Santa Clara Unified School District Volunteer Application along with a TB test and fingerprint background check. Parents must also submit the Central Park STEAM Robotics Team membership form/dues to be covered under SCUSD required insurance policies.

We support several different tracks of competition including some that have only dramatic arts with no robotics. Each year we approach the FLL Jr. and FLL competition as project-based learning by incorporating the theme into activities. We also welcome parent volunteers to propose new tracks and lead them.

We are always seeking mentors for our many different teams. If you are Central Park alumni, a FIRST-screened volunteer, or from Santa Clara Unified middle or high schools,  send us a note at centralparksteamroboticsteam at gmail to see which teams are seeking a mentor. FLL, FTC and FRC teams are welcome to mentor our teams as part of their Core Values outreach.

We support the surrounding community through outreach and support for low-income families. Every year we have provided financial assistance to families who would otherwise not be able to participate in robotics competition because of the high cost of registration and equipment. We provide loaners for families who cannot afford equipment.

We maintain robotics equipment for Central Park Elementary classroom use that would otherwise be difficult for teachers to maintain. We have run several Hour of Code workshops for all of Central Park Elementary including Dash & Dot robot, Minecraft Coding, Star Wars coding, etc.  We have hosted machine learning virtual classrooms for Central Park students to explore artificial intelligence with IBM Watson. In the past, we have hosted after-school maker workshops on Minecraft modding, squishy circuits, Raspberry Pi, painting, 3D printing, Educational Tablet Apps, 3D modeling with TinkerCAD, Makey Makey and more.

Each year's FIRST LEGO League Junior and FIRST LEGO League theme provides our robotics team with a project based learning theme which we explore as a group regardless of track. In supporting the Central Park Elementary community we have also shared these opportunities with the Central Park Elementary classrooms at events such as: Santa Clara Valley Beekeepers presentation with a live beehive, Dairy Council presentation with a mother cow and baby calf, Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center presentation with an owl, snake and opposum, etc. We have also organized field trips to the Santa Clara Valley Water District, NASA Ames, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Liquid Robotics and more.

We have hosted Wonder League workshops in the community through Devoxx4Kids at Hacker Dojo. We have hosted public community-wide FIRST LEGO League scrimmage events to help rookie teams prepare. We have also hosted community-wide public Girl Powered Vex events to promote STEM with girls in cooperation with the Rec Foundation. We have hosted outreach booths at Maker Faire Bay Aera, Silicon Valley Robot Block Party, STEM Central at the Santa Clara Central Park Library and will be at the upcoming Santa Clara Parade of Champions.

2022-23 Season organization is pending survey returns from parent volunteers to become track leads.

Meanwhile, please return the survey to at least be connected with other parents/students of similar interests.

2021-22 Season Covid Modified Schedule

For the 2021-22 season, we will be focusing on Math Olympiad.

All in-person team activities have been suspended until SCUSD approves on-campus activities with parent volunteers.

For 2022-23 we are researching and testing alternative online activities for students that could be held within current Covid safety restrictions. Please return our survey by August 12th.
