A little bit about myself...

My name is Miakje Kamstra. Many folks ask me about the origin of my name. It is Dutch. My grandfather immigrated to America from Holland.

I've lived in the Santa Cruz area for the past 30 years.  I live with my partner, Tom, and our two cats: Paco and Frisky. I have an adult son and several grand-doggies. When I was a kid I lived on a horse ranch in Arizona. We raised and trained Arabian show horses. I am an animal lover!

I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was 6 years old.  In school, my passion was music. I played the flute and piccolo. This influence stayed with me as a teacher, as I taught reading through music and saw the power of integrating the arts throughout content areas.

Where does the time go? This is my 27th year in education. I graduated with a B.A. in psychology as well as a teaching credential from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Over the years I taught Kindergarten through fifth grade as well as worked as a reading specialist for struggling readers, professional developer,  and Coordinator for the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. In 2000 I received National Board Certification. I received my M.A. and Administrative credential in Educational Leadership from San Jose State. In 2003 I was recruited to work for the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I worked as a Director of Mentor Development, supporting new and veteran teachers and administrators. In 2007 I came to Santa Clara Unified as a Principal. I love Santa Clara Unified am honored and thrilled to be working with an incredible team, opening Central Park Elementary!
